A massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake struck Chile early Saturday, killing at least 78 people, collapsing buildings and setting off a tsunami.

People were injured in the tremor, which lasted 50 seconds, but nobody was seriously hurt. The quake's centre was in the town of Calam but it could even be felt in the capital Santiago, 1260km to the south. The quake measured 7.7 on the Richter Scale – which measures earthquakes – which means that it was quite strong. Power was cut off in many towns and scared people ran out onto the streets.
